WhatsApp has finally introduced applications for Windows and Mac OS X users. After a relatively long wait, WhatsApp introduced a native desktop app to take advantage of the screen real estate and better typing experience available to computer users.

“Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.” says WhatsApp on its introductory blog post indicating the desktop application’s similarity in terms of functionality and design to WhatsApp Web where the phone is required to be connected to the desktop application for it to function.

While the connection to the app was as simple as scanning an QR code, the idea of keeping your phone constantly connected to the computer for the app to function is a downer for many.

Nevertheless, the interface is very simple and easy to navigate and is based on WhatsApp Web. Connection, once established, is smooth and reliable. Sending and receiving messages were fast and smooth as well.

By bringing it to the desktop, WhatsApp will now be able to provide a more convenient way for people to connect using their computers.”Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.”

WhatsApp’s new desktop app is available on systems running Windows 8 or above or Mac OS X 10.9+.

Overall, it’s wonderful to have a native application for WhatsApp on the desktop although the app experience could be made better by eliminating its dependence on a connection to your phone.
